From July 13 to July 24, 2026, Greve in Chianti will once again welcome the Daniel Ferro Vocal Program, the prestigious international training program for young opera singers that, for 32 years, has brought together emerging artists, renowned faculty, and music lovers from around the world in the heart of Tuscany.

Far more than a traditional masterclass, the program represents a cultural bridge between Italy and the United States, preserving the legacy of one of the twentieth century’s most respected voice teachers.

Il Maestro Daniel Ferro

Who Was M° Daniel Ferro?

Daniel Ferro (1921–2015) was one of the most influential vocal pedagogues of his generation.

Born in New York City, he studied at The Juilliard School and Columbia University before continuing his education in Europe through a Fulbright Fellowship at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. After a successful career as a bass-baritone in both Europe and the United States, he devoted much of his life to teaching, becoming a mentor to generations of opera singers.

In 1972, Ferro joined the faculty of The Juilliard School in New York, where he trained many artists who went on to perform on the world’s leading opera stages. Among his distinguished students were internationally acclaimed singers such as Kathleen Battle, Thomas Stewart, Rosalind Elias, and many others.

A Lifelong Love Affair with Tuscany

In 1995, Daniel Ferro chose Greve in Chianti as the ideal setting for a unique educational experience that combined world-class vocal training with the beauty, culture, and relaxed atmosphere of Tuscany.

Thus, the Daniel Ferro Vocal Program was born: an intensive three-week residency where young singers from around the globe receive private lessons, masterclasses, vocal coaching, and performance opportunities while fully immersing themselves in the local culture and landscape.

Following Maestro Ferro’s passing in 2015, the program has continued under the leadership of his wife, Joy B. Ferro, together with an international faculty committed to preserving his vision: creating a supportive, inspiring, and artistically rigorous environment where young performers can thrive.

Over the past three decades, the Daniel Ferro Vocal Program has become a cherished tradition in Greve in Chianti, strengthening cultural ties between Italy and the United States while establishing the town as an internationally recognized destination for advanced vocal studies.
