There’s a vibrant sound weaving its way through the rolling hills of Chianti, a melody infused with jazz, improvisation and the richness of lived experience.

Meet Giovanni Vannoni, a pianist, composer and teacher from Greve in Chianti, whose talent is redefining musical elegance with an irresistible blend of style and self-irony. Forget the stereotypical, buttoned-up musician: Giovanni takes to the stage with an eclectic spirit and a fresh, contemporary approach.

When a Sense of Humour Becomes a Signature Style

In the often overly serious worlds of classical music and jazz, Giovanni has found his own way to stand out, starting with the smallest details and turning them into his personal trademark.

He has become known for performing in decidedly unconventional socks, including colourful pairs featuring Disney’s Pluto.

Far from being a random fashion choice, this playful touch is a conscious way of taking the edge off the formality of a concert. Giovanni shows that the finest art doesn’t have to take itself too seriously to touch people’s hearts.

A Love Affair Written in Letters to Santa

Behind the artist lies a story steeped in nostalgia. His passion for music began in childhood, when every year he would write letters to Santa Claus asking, without fail, for new musical instruments — a guitar, a drum kit or an accordion.

His most romantic musical memories are tied to his grandparents. It was his grandfather who used to play the accordion on the living-room sofa, filling the house with music and passing on to Giovanni a deep, instinctive love of sound.

His teenage years were marked by creativity, but also a certain degree of chaos. It was only after finishing high school that he experienced a genuine revelation: the desire to approach music through disciplined, methodical study. Inspired by icons such as Keith Jarrett and guided by influential mentors like Paolo Birro, he began to turn his natural passion into a lifelong pursuit.

From the Big Top of "Il Circo" to the Damp Streets of Venice

Giovanni’s creativity finds expression in works with a strong narrative and emotional dimension.

His debut solo album, Il Circo (2024), is an imaginative journey inspired by the music of Tigran Hamasyan. Conceived as a vast metaphorical big top, the album unfolds like a circus performance, with each track portraying a different act or character.

His upcoming project, Pezzi di Venezia (Pieces of Venice), takes a very different direction. The album is an evocative sonic diary born during his studies at the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory in Venice. It captures life in the lagoon in all its unfiltered reality: from the poetry of the canals to the everyday struggle with relentless rain and high humidity, with the comforting, distinctly Venetian ritual of grabbing a tramezzino — even better when shaped like a gondola.

A Story of Resilience and Inspiration

What makes Giovanni Vannoni such an inspiring figure, particularly from a lifestyle perspective, is his extraordinary determination.

Following complications during birth, Giovanni has lived since infancy with a brachial plexus injury that affects movement in his right arm and hand. Rather than allowing this condition to hold him back, he has turned it into part of his own expressive identity. He has adapted his piano technique to work with his physical abilities and often uses Kinesio tape during performances to support his muscles. His journey is a powerful reminder that passion, perseverance and the right mindset can help us push beyond physical limitations and redefine what is possible.

A Harmony to Live By

Discovering Giovanni Vannoni’s music means immersing yourself in an experience that goes far beyond simply listening. It is an invitation to slow down, appreciate the subtleties of everyday life and savour each moment — much like enjoying a fine glass of wine as the sun sets over the Chianti hills.

Whether he is rising at dawn to organise his morning routine before heading off to teach at middle schools, approaching his work with dedication, or stepping into the spotlight of a theatre stage, Giovanni reminds us that true beauty lies in authenticity.

His story and his music teach us that our imperfections can become our most distinctive features, and that a little sense of humour may be the secret ingredient that makes the score of our lives truly unforgettable.
