In the splendid Chianti region, nestled between the rolling hills extending from Florence to Siena, lies one of the most iconic lands for Italian wine production.

The history of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico began in 1924, when a group of forward-thinking winemakers decided to join forces to protect and promote the quality of their wines. It was on May 14th of that year that the Consorzio del Gallo Nero was born, with the goal of defending the good name of Chianti Classico from countless imitation attempts.
From the beginning, the symbol of the Black Rooster has played a fundamental role in representing the authenticity and quality of Chianti Classico wine. This symbol has legendary origins, dating back to the battles between Florence and Siena for control of the Chianti area. According to a famous legend, to determine the boundaries between the two cities, it was agreed that two knights would set out at the crow of a rooster from their respective cities and meet at the exact point that would mark the new boundaries. Florence chose a hungry black rooster that crowed much earlier before dawn, allowing the Florentine knight to cover a greater distance and conquer more territory. Today, this symbol not only tells a story of cunning and determination but also stands as a synonym for authenticity and quality for wines produced in this area.
Since 1924, the Consorzio has gone through many phases of evolution and transformation. In the 1960s and 70s, the production of Chianti Classico saw significant expansion, but with this growth came notable challenges, such as the issue of overproduction and the consequent possible loss of quality. For this reason, the Consorzio decided to undertake a series of reforms to ensure increasingly higher standards of excellence.

With the introduction of the first rigorous production standards and the careful selection of grapes, Chianti Classico began to stand out more and more in the international wine scene. The production area was precisely delineated, and in 1984, Chianti Classico received the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG), a recognition of the wine’s quality and tradition.
A significant innovation in recent years has been the introduction of the Additional Geographical Units (UGAs), which allow further specification of the provenance of Chianti Classico. These subdivisions aim to highlight the distinctive characteristics of each territory within the denomination. The currently recognized UGAs are San Casciano, Greve, Panzano, Lamole, Montefioralle, San Donato in Poggio, Castellina, Radda, Gaiole, Castelnuovo Berardenga, and Vagliagli. Each UGA presents unique peculiarities in terms of microclimate, soil, and altitude, which are reflected in the aromatic and taste profiles of the wines produced. This allows consumers to discover and appreciate the richness and diversity of Chianti Classico in even more detail.

Today, the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico represents over 600 producers, with a vineyard area of about 7,200 hectares. Chianti Classico wines are appreciated worldwide for their unique character, the result of an extraordinary terroir and a centuries-old tradition.
Every bottle bearing the Black Rooster symbol is a guarantee of quality and passion.
In 2024, the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico celebrates a historic milestone: its centenary.
To celebrate these one hundred years of wine excellence, numerous events and special initiatives are planned: the celebrations include exclusive tastings, historical exhibitions, conferences, and meetings with producers, offering a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the world of Chianti Classico.
