If you are a trekking enthusiast and wish to explore the beauty of the Tuscan hills, Trail 425, known as the Montefioralle and Montegonzi Loop, is an experience not to be missed. This circular route, starting from the center of Greve in Chianti, will take you through enchanting medieval villages, vineyards, and olive groves, offering breathtaking views and a complete immersion in the nature and history of the Chianti region.
Starting Point: Greve in Chianti
The trail begins in the heart of Greve in Chianti, precisely from Via San Francesco. From here, we embark on a narrow, initially steep road, passing by the Museum of Sacred Art, the former Convent of San Francesco. This section offers a charming view of Greve, a small taste of the landscape wonders that await us.
Towards Montefioralle
Continuing, we quickly connect to the road leading to Montefioralle, where we turn left. At this point, the slope decreases, and after about 1.5 km, we reach the lovely village of Montefioralle, situated at 366 meters above sea level. This village, with its elliptical layout perched on top of the hill overlooking Greve, deserves a short visit. Strolling through the characteristic alleys of the village is like a journey back in time, amidst ancient stone houses and picturesque views.
It’s time to stop for a meal at one of the local inns: we recommend “La Castellana,” a typical restaurant where you can taste excellent traditional dishes while enjoying a beautiful panorama. As you savor the delicious cuisine, breathe in the special medieval atmosphere; we assure you that Montefioralle is a gem you won’t forget.
Through Vineyards and Woods
Leaving Montefioralle, we follow Via delle Case Sparse to the intersection at Montefili, at 398 meters above sea level. Here, we turn left and continue along a long white road, flanked by olive groves and vineyards. The road eventually passes through a forest, immersing us in a naturally beautiful environment. This stretch culminates at the provincial road SP118, which connects Mercatale and Panzano, at 421 meters above sea level, where we turn left again.
Returning to Greve
We follow the provincial road for about 750 meters, paying attention to vehicular traffic, until an intersection with another white road, Via delle Grillaie (560 meters).
Turning left, we begin the slow descent towards Greve. This natural-surfaced road passes through cultivated areas and woods, running alongside Montegonzi, an ancient small fortress now transformed into a hospitality structure. The circular structure of Montegonzi’s past, reminiscent of a history of defenses and battles, remains.
Conclusion of the Route
Continuing, the route alternates between paved and uneven sections, offering a variety of surfaces that make the trek even more interesting. Leaving a gated road to the right, we descend on a path that brings us back to the main square of Greve, the starting point of our journey.
